Mind, grief and morale in a long crisis

How to protect mental health under long stress: normal reactions, sleep, routine, mourning, looking after others and warning signs.

Quick answer

Most stress reactions are normal and ease within weeks if people sleep, eat, move and talk. Use look, listen, link; keep routine and roles; mark the dead; and never leave anyone alone who talks of ending their life.

Mind, grief and morale

After the physical emergency, the long strain is fear, grief and exhaustion. Groups often break from this, not from hunger.

What is normal

  • Sleeplessness, nightmares, anger, numbness, crying, guilt, panic and a feeling that nothing matters are normal reactions to abnormal events. Most ease within weeks if people sleep, eat, move and talk.
  • Grief comes in waves for months and years. There is no right way.

Simple care: look, listen, link

  1. Look for people who are withdrawn, not eating, very agitated or not sleeping.
  2. Listen without fixing or judging. Ask what they need. Stay with them.
  3. Link them to food, water, rest, family, a job, and to someone who can check on them again tomorrow.

Habits that protect

  • Sleep in shifts that give everyone at least 6 hours.
  • Eat regularly, drink water, wash.
  • Move: walking, work and stretching help.
  • Routine and roles: a daily job gives a reason to get up.
  • Together: shared meals, music, stories, games, prayer or quiet, children's play.
  • Mark the dead: a ritual or a name read aloud helps people carry on.
  • Limit news and rumours that fuel panic. Share what is known and what is not.

Warning signs

  • Talking about wanting to die, giving belongings away, withdrawal, reckless acts, heavy drinking.
  • Do not leave the person alone. Remove means of harm (weapons, medicines, ropes). Stay with them, listen, and share the watch. Say it directly: "Are you thinking of ending your life?" Asking does not cause it.

Leaders

Leaders carry the most. Rotate leadership, take rests, share decisions, and have someone you can say the hard thing to. Burnout makes bad decisions.

Children

Children show stress as clinging, bed-wetting, tantrums or silence. Routine, honesty, hugs, play and a job to do help most.
